Willem II win at AZ for first time since 2001

A first half double from Fran Sol gave Willem II a 2-0 win at AZ Alkmaar in the Dutch Eredivisie on Saturday (1st December), their first victory in the North Holland city since May 2001.

On a wet and windy night at the AFAS Stadion, Sol volleyed home from close range in the third minute and rolled in his 15th goal of the season on the half hour after Daniel Crowley and Donis Avdijaj had sprung the AZ offside trap.

AZ, who finished third last season, dominated possession but found no cutting edge in front of goal and remain seventh in the table.

John van den Brom's men were jeered from the field at the end.

Willem II move up two places to 11th and are now three points clear of the relegation zone.
