Kayne van Oevelen named Player of the Month for april
Kayne van Oevelen has been named Eredivisie Player of the Month for April. The 22-year-old FC Volendam goalkeeper wins the award for the first time.
Two clean sheets
Kayne van Oevelen is playing a key role in FC Volendam’s fight for survival in the Eredivisie. The goalkeeper kept his side in the game during a 0–0 draw against Feyenoord at the start of April and recorded another clean sheet last weekend in a 2–0 win over direct rivals Heracles Almelo. Only in the match in between, a 2–1 defeat to FC Twente, did he concede twice — though he managed to limit the damage.
With two clean sheets, Van Oevelen ranks joint-second for April. For the 22-year-old goalkeeper, it marked his third clean sheet of the season. Notably, across the three matches in April, he faced an Expected Goals on Target (xGOT) of 4.82. With just two goals conceded, he statistically prevented 2.82 goals.
He was particularly influential in the draw against Feyenoord. With four saves, he prevented 1.2 goals according to the xGOT model. Three shots were stopped to his left and one to his right. A point that could prove crucial later in the season.
Most saves
Van Oevelen made fourteen saves in April. Only Remko Pasveer (20) and Bernt Klaverboer (16) recorded more. This resulted in a save percentage of 87.5%.
For Volendam fans, these numbers come as no surprise. With 148 saves in 31 matches, the goalkeeper leads the Eredivisie. He has also kept his goal intact in one-on-one situations nineteen times this season.
First Player of the Month award
For Kayne van Oevelen, this is his first Player of the Month award. He is also the first FC Volendam player to win the prize, following team-mate Robin van Cruijsen, who secured the club’s first Johan Cruyff Talent of the Month award in September.

The Player of the Month and Johan Cruyff Talent of the Month awards are based on Opta statistics, incorporating more than sixty different metrics. These figures also play a role in determining the Player of the Year and the Johan Cruyff Talent of the Year. Both awards will be presented on Monday 25 May during the sixth edition of the Eredivisie Awards.
