Peter Bosz named Rinus Michels Manager of the Month for the first time

Peter Bosz has been named Rinus Michels Manager of the Month for the first time this season. The PSV head coach received the award for his performances in April.

Three wins

PSV were the only team to win all three of their matches in April. The Eindhoven side beat FC Utrecht 4–3, followed by victories over Sparta Rotterdam (0–2) and PEC Zwolle (6–1).

PSV scored twelve goals and were highly efficient with an Expected Goals total of 7.6. They also recorded the most possession (64.2%), the highest number of successful passes (1,608), and the most shots on target (24). Defensively, they were equally solid, conceding the second-fewest shots (27) and posting the second-lowest Expected Goals against (3.4).

Thanks to this strong run, PSV secured the earliest league title in history on 5 April. For Peter Bosz, it marked his third consecutive league title.

First monthly award

For Peter Bosz, this is his first monthly award. The 62-year-old coach has previously been named Rinus Michels Manager of the Year three times, but had to wait longer this season for his first Manager of the Month title.

That can be explained by the data model used. The assessment takes into account factors such as results, goals scored and conceded, and the relative strength of the team and its opponents. As PSV had been top of the table since matchday 12, it took longer for Bosz to stand out based on these criteria.

After his strong run of results and a third consecutive league title, the Rinus Michels Manager of the Month award ultimately became inevitable.

About the awards

The Rinus Michels Manager of the Month is a new initiative this season by Eredivisie CV, Coaches Betaald Voetbal (Managers Union), De Voetbaltrainer and ESPN. With this award, the initiators aim to provide additional recognition for coaches in the highest tier of Dutch football.

As with the nominations for the annual Rinus Michels Award, all eighteen coaches are assessed using a data model developed by Hypercube. This model takes into account factors such as results achieved, goals scored and conceded, and the relative strength of both the team and its opponents.

The latter is determined using the Euro Club Index (ECI). In this ranking, European clubs are evaluated weekly based on their performances in domestic and international competitions. The score provides insight into a club’s current strength and whether a team is overperforming or underperforming.
