The golden substitution effect
Substitutes from PSV (16 goals) and FC Twente (14) have been more frequently successful in scoring than those from any other Eredivisie team this season. In the entire history, only three teams have seen a substitute score more often than PSV this season. The record was set by the Eindhoven team two seasons ago, when they saw a substitute player score nineteen times.

A look back at Eredivisie record holders
With teams now allowed to make five substitutions per match, it's not very surprising that more goals have been scored by substitutes in recent years. However, the individual records date back much further. Erik Meijer was the first player to score eight goals as a substitute in an Eredivisie season for PSV again in 1994/95. Since then, only Georgios Samaras in 2004/05 for sc Heerenveen and Klaas Jan Huntelaar in 2019/20 for Ajax have managed to match that record.

Who will break the scoring record this season?
This season, Ricky van Wolfswinkel has come within one goal of the substitute goalscoring record, but due to the departure of Manfred Ugalde, Van Wolfswinkel has been in the starting lineup in recent weeks, preventing him from further challenging the record. Perhaps PSV's Ricardo Pepi, who scored six times as a substitute, stands a better chance of joining the list of record holders.

Is Myron Boadu the key to success?
At FC Twente, the role of supersub has been flawlessly taken over by Myron Boadu, who has already scored twice in 130 minutes as a substitute. A substitution appearance by Boadu may well be the key to success for FC Twente, as he has won all four of his league matches against PSV and scored twice in these games. This makes him the only player in Eredivisie history to have played so often against the Eindhoven team and won all these matches.
