PSV thrash Willem II 6-1 to top table

PSV Eindhoven increased their lead at the top of the Dutch Eredivisie standings after thrashing Willem II 6-1 on Saturday (1st September).

Following three wins from as many games, PSV Eindhoven looked to extend a perfect start to their Dutch Eredivisie title defence when Willem II visited Philips Stadion on Saturday.

After a promising start for the visitors, PSV took full control with long range strikes from Jorrit Hendrix and Steven Bergwijn inside the first 15 minutes.

Gaston Pereiro made it 3-0 from the penalty spot - referee Jochem Kamphuis ruling that Hirving Lozano had been fouled by Freek Heerkens following a VAR review.

Nick Viergever then scored the first of his two goals on the stroke of half-time - the former Ajax man completing his brace in the 49th minute, shortly after Fran Sol had pulled one back for Willem II.

Bergwijn also finished the game with two goals, capping the scoring in the 72nd minute, and the 6-1 victory took PSV five points clear at the top of the standings from AZ and Ajax, who visit Heracles and Vitesse respectively on Sunday.
