Highlighted: N.E.C. in Top Form on the Hunt for Records

The transfer window was bustling for N.E.C., seeing the departure of players like Magnus Mattsson, Elayis Tavsan, and Sai van Wermeskerken, while also welcoming new talents such as Tjaronn Chery, Sylla Sow, and Yvandro Borges Sanches. With so much transfer news, it's easy to overlook the impressive form Nijmegen's team has shown in recent months.

Best Team of 2024

N.E.C. can be confidently labeled as a team in top form. They haven't lost any of their last seven Eredivisie matches, accumulating seventeen points in the process. Since a midweek round in early December, no other team in the Eredivisie has earned as many points as Rogier Meijer's side (17, tied with Ajax). It's worth noting, though, that N.E.C. and Ajax have played one more game than teams like PSV and Feyenoord, who have similarly few losses during this period.

In any case, N.E.C. is on an impressive streak, putting them in contention with title contenders. They've only lost one of their last thirteen Eredivisie matches (a narrow 1-2 defeat against Ajax at the Goffertstadion on December 3rd). Thanks to this form, some exciting records are within reach for Nijmegen.

N.E.C. could match their best away streak of the 21st century if they win or draw against RKC this weekend. They haven't lost any of their last six away matches in the Eredivisie, a feat achieved only once this century in seven consecutive away matches (from February to September 2008). Additionally, N.E.C. has scored in each of their last fifteen Eredivisie matches, equalling their longest streak at the highest level (also 15 in 2012). A goal against RKC would set a new club record.

This remarkable run has been partially fueled by Tjaronn Chery's spectacular debut. The Surinamese international, despite being 35 years old and having played abroad for several years, is showing no signs of decline. Chery has scored in each of his first two Eredivisie matches for N.E.C. and could join a very exclusive club this weekend. Only two other N.E.C. players have scored in their first three Eredivisie matches for the club: Georgi Hristov in 2000 and Romano Denneboom in 2004 (both in 3 matches).
