Ajax title hopes badly damaged after 2-3 loss

Ajax saw their title hopes take a knock on Sunday (4th March) as they lost 3-2 at Vitesse in the Eredivisie, a result that leaves them 10 points behind leaders PSV with 8 games to play.

Spurred on by their die-hard fans Vitesse Arnhem have a reputation as giant killers. They beat Feyenoord at home three weeks earlier and after Navarone Foor fired home this thunderbolt they were one-nil up against title chasers Ajax. His second goal of the season - this from 30 yards and goalkeeper Andre Onana had no chance.

Vitesse are looking for a place in the Europa League next season - Ajax needed a win to cut the deficit behind leaders PSV to seven points, but they had themselves to blame for the second - as Bryan Linssen stole the ball and made it 2-0. Poor control from Max Wober and Linssen pounced.

In an entertaining game Ajax scored a second with five minutes to go - a volley from Siem de Jong, but it was too late - Vitesse grabbing the three points, while Ajax slipped to 10 points behind PSV with eight to play.
