Highlighted: Luuk de Jong on his way to more records in Johan Cruyff Shield

On Friday, the Dutch football season kicks off with the battle for the Johan Cruyff Shield. Many players will be eagerly awaiting the start of the first final of the season, but for Luuk de Jong, it's almost routine to be in action during the season's opener. And he's been quite successful at it. The striker already holds several records related to the Johan Cruyff Shield and has the chance to etch his name even more prominently in the history books.

Chasing Dutch Super Cup Record

If Luuk de Jong takes part in the Johan Cruyff Shield, he will secure his first record. It will be his seventh appearance in the Dutch Super Cup, more than any other player. Currently, he shares this record with three others. On five of the previous six occasions, De Jong also went home with a medal. Only Ronald Waterreus managed to win the trophy as many times. So, if De Jong's team triumphs this time, he will become the sole record holder.

Most goals and assists

One record is already in the bag for the PSV forward: no player has been involved in as many goals in the Johan Cruyff Shield as Luuk de Jong. He scored three goals and provided two assists in these matches. Last year, the attacker couldn't find the net himself, but he did assist Guus Til. Til became the first player ever to score a hat-trick in the Johan Cruyff Shield, joining De Jong and five others who have scored three times in the competition. Can either of them become the first player to score four goals in this duel?

Can Bijlow do it again?

Feyenoord has far less experience in the Johan Cruyff Shield. Only Justin Bijlow has previously played in this match. In 2018, the goalkeeper played a heroic role by stopping two penalties in a shoot-out against PSV. That was the only time Luuk de Jong didn't go home with the trophy.
