The supporters and stadiums bring color to the Eredivisie. For many fans, the stadium has become a second home. Whether the sun is shining or it's raining, in good times and bad, hundreds of thousands of supporters gather weekly in the stands to cheer for their favorite club. Alongside the clubs, players, and staff, they are all part of Our Football. This season, we take a tour of the eighteen fields with some photographers. This week, we showcase images from Excelsior Rotterdam.
Background
Excelsior Rotterdam, founded on July 23, 1902 by a group of friends from Kralingen, started as one of the first working-class clubs and evolved into a club often described as 'sympathetic, convivial, and cozy'.
Despite its modest financial resources, the club managed to distinguish itself in professional football and thrive, with highlights such as championships in the Eerste Divisie (1974, 1979, and 2006) and promotions to the Eredivisie (1970, 1982, 2002, 2010, 2014, and 2022). The club's best years in the Eredivisie were in 1980 and 1983 when it finished ninth both seasons.
The Rotterdam-based club plays its matches at the Van Donge & De Roo Stadium, which accommodates over 4,500 fans.
