PSV suffer humiliating 5-0 defeat in Tilburg

Eredivisie leaders PSV Eindhoven suffered a humiliating defeat when they lost 5-0 at lowly Willem II Tilburg on Saturday (10th March).

PSV Eindhoven had the chance to extend their lead in the Eredivisie when they visited Willem II on Saturday. With second-placed Ajax not due to play until Sunday (11th March), a victory for PSV would take them 13 points clear.

The home side, who started the game five points above the relegation zone, scored the opening goal their play deserved. Ben Rienstra was on target in the 21st minute to stun the leaders. It remained 1-0 at the break, but the second 45 minutes proved to be a nightmare for PSV.

In the 59th minute, Elmo Lieftink won the ball in the PSV half and found substitute Giliano Wijnaldum. He then set up Fran Sol to double Willem II's lead. Ten minutes later the home side were awarded a penalty when Derrick Luckassen blocked the ball with his arm from Rienstra's shot. Sol duly despatched the spot kick and it was 3-0 to Willem II

The home fans could hardly believe their eyes as Rienstra scored his second goal of the night in the 76th minute. Again Lieftink won the ball on the left before setting up Rienstra.

With the game coming to its conclusion PSV's night went from bad to worse. Firstly, Derrick Luckassen was dismissed for a second booking after a foul on Wijnaldum in the 89th minute.  And then Sol completed his hat-trick from the spot in a five star performance from Willem II.

PSV manager Phillip Cocu was left shell-shocked at the final whistle. The last time Willem II beat PSV was 14 years ago.
