Eredivisie

Highlighted: FC Utrecht proves tough to beat once again

Last weekend, FC Utrecht accomplished what no one else had managed this Eredivisie season: snatching points from PSV. It marked Utrecht's tenth consecutive unbeaten league match, with the Domstedelingen losing last in the Eredivisie on October 6th (1-0 against FC Volendam). Against Excelsior, FC Utrecht has the chance to make this unbeaten streak even more remarkable.

After that loss in Volendam, FC Utrecht didn't lose any of the subsequent ten Eredivisie matches (W3, D7), marking the club's joint-longest unbeaten streak in Eredivisie history this century. Only once in the club's history have the Domstedelingen remained unbeaten in the Eredivisie for longer: a run of thirteen matches between November 1990 and March 1991.

A true resurgence, after losing seven of the first eight Eredivisie matches this season (W1). While FC Utrecht fans may have been hesitant to check the standings earlier in the season, they can do so more confidently now. Despite sitting in fourteenth place, positions above are within reach. Their upcoming opponent, Excelsior, is ninth with just one point more. Thanks to recent results, FC Utrecht fans can once again look upwards.

This coming Saturday, FC Utrecht can extend this streak further. FC Utrecht has remained unbeaten in the last ten Eredivisie matches against Excelsior (W6, D4) since a 1-0 defeat in Kralingen in October 2015. Earlier this Eredivisie season, FC Utrecht narrowly avoided defeat against the Rotterdam side, thanks to a late equalizer from defender Modibo Sagnan, after trailing 0-2. Utrecht also demonstrated this weekend that they don't panic when trailing; only three teams have earned more points after falling behind this Eredivisie season than FC Utrecht (6).
