Brilliant late winner from Idrissi as AZ Alkmaar beat Sparta

A late goal from Oussama Idrissi goal gave AZ Alkmaar a 2-1 home win over Sparta Rotterdam on Saturday.

AZ Alkmaar's last defeat in the Eredivisie was in December last year, when John van den Brom's team were beaten at home by Ajax. Bottom of the table Sparta Rotterdam, on the other hand, came into the match on the back of two losses in their last three matches and had won only three matches so far in the league.

The difference between the two sides was clear from the start, with AZ dominating possession and having a couple of chances inside the opening minutes. But against the run of play, Sparta were the first to score in the 19th minute, thanks to Julian Chabot's powerful header from a corner.

In the 44th minute, the home side deservedly found an equaliser. Once again, Idrissi was the assistman. Wout Weghorst had only to push the ball in the net after his team-mate's wonderful pass.

AZ continued to dominate in the second half, with plenty of opportunities while Sparta had only one shot on goal. Huth could nothing to prevent Idrissi's left-footed shot into the far corner of the net in the 68th minute. It was the goal which sealed the game.

AZ Alkmaar are third in the table, nine points behind leaders PSV Eindhoven and four behind second-placed Ajax. Sparta remain bottom after their 16th defeat in 25 matches.
