Eredivisie

A late penalty gave VVV-Venlo a 1-0 victory over Feyenoord

Mid-table VVV-Venlo played host to Dutch champions Feyenoord in the Eredivisie on Sunday, with both teams hoping to build on winning performances last time out.

The goalkeepers kept the scoresheet blank in the opening half though. VVV-Venlo's Clint Leemans tried his luck from long range in the 26th minute, but Brad Jones waas equal to the task. At the other end, Morroco international Karim El Ahmadi tested the Venlo 'keeper five minutes before the break, but Lars Unnerstall stood firm.

After the interval, Feyenoord created the best chances but efforts from Jens Toornstra, El Ahmadi, and Steven Berghuis were all dealt with by Unnerstall. The visitors were made to regret their wastefulness. With just two minutes left on the clock, Venlo were awarded a penalty after Feyenoord defender Renato Tapia fouled Romeo Castelen.

Midfielder Clint Leemans stepped up to score his ninth goal of the season and Venlo stole the points with a 1-0 victory. They are now just three points outside the European competition play-off places. Feyenoord remain fourth, 19 points behind current leaders PSV.
