Vangelis Pavlidis was voted Eredivisie Player of the Month on Saturday, with the Greek AZ striker emerging as the best player in the Eredivisie in the election based on data and fan votes.
In a month with three rounds of play, eight clubs came into action just twice: PSV - Go Ahead Eagles, FC Twente - Vitesse, Ajax - FC Volendam and AZ - Heracles Almelo, in preparation for the decisive European qualifying matches, will all be made up at the end of September. Despite playing one less game in Alkmaar, coach Pascal Jansen's team is in joint second place with six points.
The most important man in Alkmaar was undoubtedly Vangelis Pavlidis. The 24-year-old Greek striker was involved in four goals in the victories over Go Ahead Eagles (5-1) and RKC Waalwijk (1-3): three goals and one assist. In fact, his goal in Waalwijk marked Pavlidis' 50th official goal for AZ (in all competitions).
Most goals scored since summer 2021
Vangelis Pavlidis had the most shots on goal (7) out of all players in the Eredivisie in August. In addition, he made 16 ball contacts in the enemy penalty area and was voted KPN Man of the Match once. Since his arrival at AZ in the summer of 2021, the Greek international has scored more Eredivisie goals (31) than any other player in the Eredivisie. The top marksman has also proven to be particularly effective in the month of August: since making his premier league debut in 2019 (Willem II), he scored a total of 10 goals and gave three assist in August, more than in any other month.
First Eredivisie Player of the Month award
This is Vangelis Pavlidis's first Eredivisie Player of the Month award. He is the fourth AZ player to receive the award after Jonas Svensson (January 2019), Oussama Idrissi (December 2019 and January 2020) and Jesper Karlsson (December 2021). In the August monthly election, the AZ forward managed to stay ahead of forwards Tobias Lauritsen (Sparta Rotterdam) and Nikolas Agrafiotis (Excelsior Rotterdam), among others.
