It took him 14 years but Robin van Persie finally added to his goal tally for the club of his youth Feyenoord, as the Dutch club beat Heracles 1-0 in the eredivisie on Sunday (18th Sunday).
Robin van Persie was 20-years-old when he was taken away from Feyenoord by Arsene Wenger - and the Dutchman enjoyed eight seasons at Arsenal.
Now at the age of 34 he is enjoying a swansong at his old club - starting in central midfield against Heracles who almost went ahead in the 55th minute when the ball crunched into the crossbar from Kristoffer Peterson. Australian keeper Brad Jones appeared to get a feather touch on the ball and then did well to snuff out trouble from the rebound.
But four minutes later came the moment Feyenoord fans had been waiting for - the prodigal son on his favourite left foot, and steered past Justin Bijlow in the Heracles goal. 14 years after his last goal for the club Van Persie showed he still has a lot to offer. It was his 23rd goal in 82 games for Feyenoord and - Bijlow had no chance.
The Dutch champions though have been inconsistent this season and they nearly allowed Heracles to score an equaliser. But it finished 1-0 as Feyenoord remained in fourth place, fifteen points outside of the second and final Champions League spot held by Ajax.
A gap beyond even the talents of van Persie.
