Václav Černý named as Eredivisie Player of the Month for May
Václav Černý was named Eredivisie Player of the Month on Friday. The FC Twente forward performed best in the Eredivisie in May, according to statistics and votes from football fans.
Václav Černý is the man par excellence at FC Twente. In May, the Czech winger won against FC Emmen (0-3), N.E.C. Nijmegen (4-0), RKC Waalwijk (0-5) and his former employer Ajax (3-1). Černý was directly involved in six goals in these four games (three goals and three assists), which, together with those of Million Manhoef, was the highest number in the Eredivisie. He was also involved in the most goal attempts (32) and shots on goal (8). His performance earned Černý an election as KPN Man of the Match twice.
Most dangerous this season
Over the whole season (including playoffs), the forward was involved in 25 of Twente's 68 goals. Besides being club top scorer (14 goals), having the most assists (11) and thus earning the title MVP (25 goals), the forward has created the most chances (81), cleared shots (67), successful dribbles (65) and blocked opponents' shots (32). He also recorded the highest top speed of his team (34.12 km/h).
First ever Player of the Month at FC Twente
The 25-year-old forward is the first FC Twente player to be voted Eredivisie Player of the Month in the six-year history of the monthly election. Previously, Danilo Pereira (October 2020) and Manfred Ugalde (March 2023) won the award for Johan Cruyff Talent of the Month. In addition to a trophy, the Czech also wins the final Eredivisie Player of the Month card of the season in EA SPORTS FIFA 23.
To add more sparkle to the season, the Czech will go into the play-offs with FC Twente hunting for the last European ticket (preliminary rounds of the UEFA Europa Conference League). Coach Ron Jans' team won the first semi-final match with 1-2 from sc Heerenveen. Cerny scored the first goal of this match. Next Sunday will be the return at the Grolsch Veste.
Eredivisie Awards
The Eredivisie Player of the Month and Johan Cruyff Talent of the Month Awards are based on statistics (StatsPerform) and votes from football fans (KPN Man of the Match). These components also weigh for the shortlisting of the awards for Eredivisie Player of the Year and Johan Cruyff Talent of the Year. Ultimately, the 18 captains (via the players' union VVCS) and the 18 trainers (via Coaches Professional Football) decide the two winners. These awards, like those in the Azerion Women's Eredivisie, will be presented on 4 September 2023 during the Eredivisie Awards on ESPN.
