Together Against Loneliness: Eredivisie takes action to combat youth loneliness

Half of all young people in the Netherlands feel lonely. It’s a sobering reality that the Eredivisie is tackling head-on this weekend with its “Together Against Loneliness” campaign. Eredivisie CV is joining forces with Eredivisie clubs, (former) players like Luuk de Jong and Gianni Zuiverloon, De Luisterlijn, ESPN, the VriendenLoterij, and the KPN Mooiste Contact Fonds. Together, they’re taking a powerful step to break the stigma around youth loneliness and encourage open conversations.

1 in 2 young people feels lonely

According to the 2024 Young Adults Health Monitor, a staggering 57% of young people between the ages of 18 and 25 feel lonely. Youth loneliness has been on the rise in recent years, partly due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and increased digitalization. The consequences can be severe—both mentally and physically.

With the support of over 9 million football fans in the Netherlands, the Eredivisie is using its unifying power to send a clear message to young people: you are not alone. This weekend, during match play, the league will shine a light on this pressing social issue.

For many young people, life can feel like a game they have to play alone
Jan de Jong, CEO of Eredivisie

“Football isn’t just about winning — it’s about unity and connection,” says Jan de Jong, CEO of Eredivisie. “But for many young people, life can feel like a game they’re playing on their own. With this campaign, we want to show that no one has to go through it alone. Everyone can be part of a team. Asking for help isn’t a weakness—it’s a strength. Together, we can make loneliness visible and encourage young people to speak up.”

‘Together Against Loneliness’

As part of the “Together Against Loneliness” campaign, the Eredivisie is launching several initiatives this weekend to help young people break the silence around loneliness. A powerful video highlights the invisible struggles of young people who feel lonely—even in a packed stadium. The campaign will also be promoted through LED signage, interviews with (former) Eredivisie players, and other awareness efforts.

Young people need to know: you’re not alone. There’s always someone who will listen

De Luisterlijn

The Eredivisie is actively promoting De Luisterlijn, an anonymous helpline available 24/7. Staffed by specially trained volunteers, the line offers a listening ear and emotional support. It can be reached by phone at 088 0767 000 (available 24/7), or via chat daily between 10:00 and 22:00.

“We see every day how strong the need is for genuine human connection,” says Richard Coonen, Managing Director of De Luisterlijn. “Young adults especially need to know: you’re not alone. There’s always someone who will listen.”

KPN and VriendenLoterij: Stronger Together Against Loneliness

This campaign is made possible through support from social partners VriendenLoterij and the KPN Mooiste Contact Fonds. Their contributions help reach even more young people. For instance, during halftime at the Willem II - Ajax match, VriendenLoterij is hosting a penalty challenge with YouTuber Noah Zeeuw. For every goal scored, a donation will be made to De Luisterlijn, with VriendenLoterij matching the contributions with an additional donation. A symbolic check will be presented to De Luisterlijn after the event.

The KPN Mooiste Contact Fonds is supporting the campaign by offering tickets to all 9 matches this weekend for young people who have experienced loneliness. The initiative provides a unique opportunity for these individuals to come together, make new connections, and share a meaningful football experience.

Join the Movement: Together Against Loneliness

Everyone can play a role in breaking the stigma around youth loneliness. Whether by starting a conversation, sharing your story, or simply asking someone how they’re really doing—you can make a difference. By spreading the message, we can collectively help reduce feelings of isolation. The campaign calls for a future where no young person ever feels alone.

Program Adjustments Due to the Passing of Leo Beenhakker

Due to the passing of football coach Leo Beenhakker, a moment of silence will be held before all matches this weekend. While Eredivisie CV considered postponing the “Together Against Loneliness” campaign, it was ultimately decided to proceed — respectfully and appropriately — given the long-standing preparations and the many lonely young people and partners already invited to the matches, including De Luisterlijn.
