Tjaronn Chery named May's Eredivisie Player of the Month
On Friday, Tjaronn Chery was named Eredivisie Player of the Month. The 35-year-old playmaker from N.E.C. Nijmegen was chosen as this month’s best Eredivisie player, on the basis of Opta stats and fan votes.
Impressive season
In May, N.E.C. Nijmegen secured decisive victories against Excelsior Rotterdam (0-3) and Almere City (1-4), while narrowly losing to Feyenoord (2-3). With a cup final, a sixth-place finish in the Eredivisie, and matching their points record from the 1971-1972 season (53 points), Nijmegen has crowned a fantastic year in the Eredivisie. As the icing on the cake, they may yet secure a European football spot through the play-offs.
Five goals involved
35-year-old Tjaronn Chery, on loan from Maccabi Haifa during the winter break, quickly became one of Eredivisie's standout players. In May, no player was involved in more Eredivisie goals than Chery (three goals and two assists). Only Luuk de Jong (16) had more shots than Chery (15), with Chery leading in shots on target (7). He also contributed significantly with eight chances created and 31 passes into the penalty area. Chery's excellent performances earned him the KPN Man of the Match award twice in the last three games.
First-ever player from N.E.C. Nijmegen
This marks Tjaronn Chery's first selection as Eredivisie Player of the Month. In the monthly voting, he edged out competitors like Sem Steijn (FC Twente) and Steven Bergwijn (Ajax). Additionally, the 35-year-old midfielder is the first-ever player from N.E.C. Nijmegen to be chosen as Eredivisie Player of the Month; previously, Ali Akman (August 2021) and Elayis Tavşan (October 2021) had won the Johan Cruyff Talent of the Month award.
Eredivisie Awards
The Eredivisie Player of the Month, Johan Cruyff Talent of the Month and Eredivisie Team of the Month are selected on the basis of statistics (Opta) and votes from football fans (KPN Man of the Match). These criteria also play a role in establishing the shortlist for the Eredivisie Player of the Year and Johan Cruyff Talent of the Year awards. These awards, along with the Azerion Vrouwen Eredivisie awards, will be presented during the Eredivisie Awards ceremony (2 September 2024).
