These are the Eredivisie One to Watch players according to football experts in the Netherlands

The 2024/25 Eredivisie season kicks off this weekend. But who will be the standout player this year and become the One to Watch? The Eredivisie gathered data from various sports journalists, data partners, and former players, and this year, some surprising choices have emerged.

Journalists

This year, Dutch journalists are more often choosing names from the traditional top 5. Below is a selection of the journalists and their picks:

  • Sjoerd Mossou (Algemeen Dagblad) - Kian Fitz-Jim from Ajax
"I hope that Ajax's current extensive renovation will have a positive impact on Kian Fitz-Jim, somewhat like what has happened at Feyenoord in the past, where out of necessity, young talents were given more and faster opportunities. Fitz-Jim is an intelligent player, always on the move, with excellent functional technique. If he can match up physically and mentally, he has everything a modern midfielder needs."

  • Maarten Wijffels (Algemeen Dagblad) - Daan Rots from FC Twente
"Sometimes you see a player in a top match for the first time and immediately think: YES! That happened to me in September 2022 with Daan Rots during Twente-PSV. Two years later, he is now set to help carry Twente in the Eredivisie and in Europe. And Oranje? Don't rule it out."

  • Dolf van Aert (Brabants Dagblad) - Ringo Meerveld from Willem II
"Three years ago, he joined from FC Den Bosch as a top talent, but then struggled with injuries. However, last year, he was one of the standout players in the Keuken Kampioen Divisie. Can the 21-year-old attacking midfielder Ringo Meerveld now show his quality at the highest level?"
  • Mike Verweij (De Telegraaf) - Mika Godts from Ajax
"This Belgian talent has everything to become a key player. Godts knows better than anyone that he needs to become much more effective than he has been so far in Ajax 1. And he needs to stay injury-free, as he has spent too much time on the sidelines."

  • Willem Vissers (De Volkskrant) - Gjivai Zechiël from Feyenoord
"A beautiful, versatile player with flair. Very thoughtful in his comments as well. He's at the age for a breakthrough."

  • Rik Elfrink (Eindhovens Dagblad) - Ismael Saibari from PSV
"Last season, he played little after the winter break due to injury, but just before that, he made a strong impression in PSV's midfield. A player who, on one hand, can decide or turn around games with a velvet touch, but also has the strength and dynamism to control situations. If he can further improve his productivity, I expect a great season for Saibari, and I think he will be hard to keep at PSV next year."

  • Sander Berends (Elf Voetbal) - Anis Hadj Moussa from Feyenoord
"Cutting, turning, and cutting again. The moves of Anis Hadj Moussa are often unpredictable. The Algerian winger is an attraction in himself. Someone who keeps fans on the edge of their seats, someone who can dazzle his opponents. He needs to stay motivated and sharp, but with nearly fifty thousand spectators at De Kuip, that shouldn’t be a problem."

  • Arno Vermeulen (NOS) - Paxten Aaronson from FC Utrecht
"He already made a good impression at Vitesse after the winter break and is now playing in a much better team. Goal-oriented, technically skilled, with a great mentality. And he already has serious mileage, as he was part of the U.S. team for the Paris Olympics."

  • Bart Frouws (VI) - Juho Talvitie from Heracles Almelo
"Juho Talvitie has long been regarded as one of Finland's top talents and was the dribble king in Belgium's second division last season. The 19-year-old right winger made his debut for the national team in June, even though he has never played at the highest level. Talvitie might need some time to adjust at Heracles Almelo, but with his speed, dribbling, and long-range shots, he’s a potential fan favorite."

  • Pieter Zwart (VI) - Peer Koopmeiners from AZ
"Last season, he performed excellently at Almere City FC, becoming the king of ball recoveries. I expect him to make a definitive breakthrough at AZ this season."

  • Justus Dingemanse (former Voetbalzone) - Noah Ohio from FC Utrecht
"Noah Ohio is only 21 but already has an impressive list of (inter)national clubs to his name. He played in the youth teams of Manchester City and RB Leipzig. After stints at Standard Liège and Hull City, he is now at FC Utrecht, where he has big shoes to fill after Sam Lammers' departure. Under Michael Reiziger, he played eight matches for the Netherlands U-21 team, scoring in five consecutive games. It will be interesting to see if he can live up to his top talent status at De Galgenwaard."

Eredivisie Data Partners

Opta (StatsPerform) and SciSports, with their data experts, have compiled a One to Watch XI. The standout name in this team is Troy Parrott. The current AZ player joined from Tottenham Hotspur after having a commendable season with Excelsior Rotterdam last year. He is the leading attacker in both the SciSports and OptaJohan XIs but was not singled out by journalists as the One to Watch for this season. Additionally, PSV midfielder Malik Tillman and Ajax defender Jorrel Hato appear in both XIs.

(Former) football players

Former footballers also had their say and selected their One to Watch. One notable name that stands out is Thomas Beelen from Feyenoord. The 23-year-old defender is seen by Bram van Polen and others as a late bloomer who is now on the verge of breaking through. John van ‘t Schip, who deliberately avoided choosing an Ajax player for this selection, also voted for Beelen for the same reason.

  • Theo Janssen - Ruben van Bommel from AZ
"Another year of experience should make the difference at AZ."

  • Jeroen Heubach - Mathias Kjølo from FC Twente
"Not flashy, but very important for the team."

  • Maarten de Fockert - Fabian de Keijzer from Heracles Almelo
"A keeper with all the potential but plagued by injuries in recent years. He is finally going to play at the highest level with Heracles, which promises a lot. Exceptionally good reflexes—almost cat-like—and phenomenal in one-on-one situations."

  • Khalid Sinouh - Anass Salah-Eddine from FC Twente
"Versatile, technically skilled, and a very intelligent player."

  • Leonne Stentler - Ismael Saibari from PSV
"His power, technical skills, and depth are qualities to watch out for."

  • Joost van Aken - Samir Lagsir from PEC Zwolle
"For my One to Watch, I'm going with Samir Lagsir from PEC Zwolle. After recovering from a long-term injury, I expect him to really stand out due to his athletic ability combined with functional technique and striking ability with both feet. Now that he's fit, I believe he'll truly fulfill his potential and make a difference, especially in one-on-one duels against defenders."

  • Bram van Polen - Thomas Beelen from Feyenoord
"In his first year after moving up from the Keuken Kampioen Divisie, he has rapidly developed into a key player at the back for Feyenoord. The new system under Brian Priske suits him perfectly. Beelen has all the attributes to become the One to Watch. Fast, intelligent, daring, and good in one-on-one situations. Having gained confidence from last season, he can now show how good he is with the ball as well."

  • John van 't Schip - Thomas Beelen from Feyenoord
"I deliberately chose not to select an Ajax player for this election, which is why Thomas Beelen is my One to Watch. A late bloomer who is developing well with leadership qualities. He is tall and strong in the air, and his ball skills are also improving."

  • Bart Vriends - Sven Mijnans from AZ
"Since his debut at Sparta, he has shown a steep learning curve. Each year he gets better, stronger, and more dominant. Elegant, puts a lot of energy into the game, and has a good dose of confidence. Now wearing the number 10 shirt, he’s ready to make a real impact."

Analysts and Presenters at ESPN

Finally, the presenters and analysts from ESPN have also shared their One to Watch for the upcoming season. Two players who frequently appear on the list are sc Heerenveen midfielder Amara Condé (selected by Hans Kraay Jr. and Milan van Dongen) and Go Ahead Eagles forward Søren Tengstedt (chosen by Jan Joost van Gangelen and Fresia Cousiño Arias).

  • Mario Been - Ilias Sebaoui from sc Heerenveen
