Sem Steijn named Eredivisie Player of the Year 2024/’25

Sem Steijn has been crowned Eredivisie Player of the Year 2024/’25 at the Eredivisie Awards. The 23-year-old FC Twente midfielder received the most votes from the captains of all 18 Eredivisie clubs. In a special moment, the award was presented to him by his father, Maurice Steijn.

Steijn was nominated alongside Davy Klaassen (Ajax), Igor Paixão (Feyenoord), Ismael Saibari (PSV), and Kenneth Taylor (Ajax). The shortlist was based on Opta performance data and KPN Man of the Match fan votes. The final decision was made by the 18 Eredivisie captains in cooperation with players' union VVCS.

Earlier in the evening, Steijn was also awarded the Willy van der Kuijlen Trophy as the league’s top scorer. He netted 18 goals with his right foot, 2 with his left, and 4 with his head. He added 3 more goals during the European play-offs, playing a key role in FC Twente’s campaign.

Steijn is the first midfielder since Jari Litmanen (1993/’94) to score more than 20 goals in a single Eredivisie season, and just the second player after Luuk de Jong (2023/’24) to win both the top scorer and Player of the Year awards in the same year.

He also becomes the first FC Twente player ever to win Eredivisie Player of the Year. Past winners include Luuk de Jong (2023/’24), Orkun Kökcü (2022/’23), Jurriën Timber (2021/’22), Dusan Tadic (2020/’21), and Frenkie de Jong (2018/’19).
