Ruben van Bommel has made an outstanding start at PSV. After his summer move from AZ, the winger came off the bench to help win the Johan Cruyff Shield. Now he has added his first individual honour in Eindhoven: Johan Cruyff Talent of the Month for August.
Second-youngest PSV scorer
Van Bommel hit the ground running in the Eredivisie. Just three minutes into the opening match against Sparta Rotterdam (6-1 win), he found the net with a stylish outside-foot finish. He struck again in the 4-2 victory over FC Groningen, bursting clear down the left before firing home PSV’s third goal.
At 21 years and 20 days, Van Bommel became the second-youngest PSV player ever to score in each of his first two Eredivisie home matches, behind only Ralf Edström in 1973 (20 years, 336 days).
Across his four league appearances in August, Van Bommel recorded five shots and two goals, with a shot conversion rate of 40%. He also created eight chances, delivered six crosses and attempted 14 dribbles.
Second monthly award
This is Van Bommel’s second Johan Cruyff Talent of the Month title, having first won the award with AZ in February 2024. The accolade is presented to the best U21 players in the Eredivisie, open to those born in 2004 or later.
As part of the prize, the Johan Cruyff Talent of the Month receives a €2,500 cheque on behalf of the VriendenLoterij for his former amateur club, SV Meerssen. In addition, his award has generated a €5,000 contribution towards social projects supported by the Johan Cruyff Foundation.

About the Awards
The Player of the Month and Johan Cruyff Talent of the Month are decided using Opta statistics, with more than 60 different metrics taken into account. These same stats also help determine the Eredivisie Player of the Year and Johan Cruyff Talent of the Year, which are presented at the end of the season during the Eredivisie Awards.
The monthly awards are an initiative of the Eredivisie CV in partnership with ESPN, VriendenLoterij and the Johan Cruyff Foundation.
