Round-Up Matchweek 10: Hattrick settles top clash, big wins and brave comebacks

Matchweek 10 in the Eredivisie delivered pure drama. A hattrick in De Kuip reignited the title race, Ajax staged a comeback in Enschede, and Friesland witnessed a goal fest with late heartbreak. At the bottom, the relegation battle is beginning to take shape. From top to bottom, here are the weekend’s highlights — with figures from Opta.

Sensational Saibari blows title race wide open

The weekend’s headline clash lived up to the billing. In a thrilling encounter between Feyenoord and PSV, Peter Bosz’s side came out on top. The Eindhoven club claimed their fourth straight win over the Rotterdammers: a feat previously achieved only in 2008. Ismael Saibari was the star of the show, scoring an unforgettable hattrick. He was the first PSV player to net three times against Feyenoord since Luuk de Jong in 2014.

PSV are now unbeaten in ten consecutive away league matches and sit level on points with Feyenoord at the top of the table. The title race is well and truly back on.

Resilience and revival: Ajax and AZ overcome tricky tests

In Enschede, Ajax finally showed their fighting spirit. After falling behind early against FC Twente, the Amsterdammers turned the match on its head with three goals in eleven second-half minutes. Something they hadn’t managed in the Eredivisie since 2013. Wout Weghorst once again proved decisive against his favourite opponent, scoring his seventh goal versus Twente.

AZ also returned to winning ways, beating FC Utrecht for the first time since 2021. The 4–1 victory was emphatic, with Troy Parrott stealing the spotlight. The striker netted his 20th Eredivisie goal for AZ, becoming the fastest to reach that mark since Mounir El Hamdaoui in 2009.

Mid-table engines in full gear

Several clubs behind the top sides made strong statements. FC Groningen continued their fine form with an impressive away win at Fortuna Sittard: their third consecutive victory on the road, a first since 2014. Defender Marvin Peersman scored his first Eredivisie goal, while captain Stije Resink added yet another assist.

Sparta Rotterdam also kept their momentum going. They recorded their first clean sheet against Telstar since 2013, and their ninth clean-sheet win of 2025 (the club’s highest total in forty years). Tobias Lauritsen bagged his 40th Eredivisie goal and won six fouls, the most by a Sparta player since 2017.

N.E.C. Nijmegen remain consistent, scoring in ten straight Eredivisie matches for the first time in club history.

In Deventer, Go Ahead Eagles made it three home wins in a row against Excelsior, triumphing 2–0 thanks to a brace from Mathis Suray: his first double at the top level. It’s the first time since 1988 that the Eagles have achieved such a streak against the Rotterdam club.

Frisian fans were treated to a six-goal thriller as sc Heerenveen and NAC Breda drew 3–3. The equaliser came deep into stoppage time — the second-latest goal Heerenveen have ever conceded in the Eredivisie. Oliver Braude provided two assists, becoming the first Heerenveen player since Denzel Dumfries in 2017 to do so in a single match.

There was plenty of action in Zwolle too, where PEC Zwolle and N.E.C. shared the points in a 2–2 draw. Jamiro Monteiro scored for the second consecutive game. This time from a direct free-kick, PEC’s first since March 2024.

Relegation battle taking shape

Down at the bottom, FC Volendam earned a vital result. Their 3–0 home win over Heracles Almelo was their biggest Eredivisie victory since 2009 and extended their unbeaten run against Heracles to nine matches. The win lifted Volendam to 13th, moving them clear of the drop zone.

Heracles remain bottom, while Telstar are stuck on seven points. Just above them, NAC Breda, PEC Zwolle and Excelsior are all level on six points in 16th place. The tension is rising: one win could be the difference between safety and the relegation fight.

A hattrick in De Kuip, a comeback in Enschede and late drama in Friesland: Matchweek 10 had everything that makes the Eredivisie so unpredictable. The title race is wide open, the chasing pack is closing in, and pressure is mounting at the bottom. It’s shaping up to be a long and gripping winter.
