N.E.C. Nijmegen and manager Rogier Meijer will go their separate ways at the end of the season. In mutual discussions, both parties expressed a desire for renewal and a fresh challenge, leading to the decision not to extend the contract of the Eredivisie’s longest-serving manager.
Cup Final
Meijer has been part of N.E.C.'s first-team coaching staff since April 2019, when he, alongside Ron de Groot and Adrie Bogers, replaced the dismissed Jack de Gier. That summer, he became part of a coaching trio with Bogers and Gesthuizen. A year later, in the summer of 2020, he was appointed as the sole head coach. In his first season (2020-2021), Meijer guided N.E.C. to promotion to the Eredivisie, and in the following seasons, he comfortably maintained their top-flight status. His biggest achievement came last season, finishing sixth in the league and reaching the KNVB Cup final.
'After six years, it’s time for something new’
Technical director Carlos Aalbers commented: “Rogier has had an outstanding tenure at N.E.C. He led the club to promotion in his first year as head coach, after four tough seasons in the Keuken Kampioen Divisie (First Division). In the Eredivisie, he kept the team competitive every season, with last year’s play-off qualification and cup final appearance as the absolute highlight. As in previous years, we sat down to discuss our vision for the future, and in this week’s talks, both sides concluded that after six years, it’s time for something new. For now, the focus remains on successfully finishing the season and achieving the highest possible result.”
Meijer himself added: “My priority is to finish this season as strongly as possible, but when the time comes, I’ll look back on six fantastic years at N.E.C. I’m proud of how we’ve grown from a mid-table Keuken Kampioen Divisie side to an established Eredivisie team. Both the club and I feel it’s time for a fresh start, and I’m ready for a new challenge as a coach. N.E.C. is a fantastic club with an incredible fan base, whom we will need in the coming weeks to finish the season well—starting this Sunday against Go Ahead Eagles.”
