PSV claim first win of the season with 3-1 victory against ADO

PSV claimed their first league win in their first home game of the 2019/20 Eredivisie season. PSV came from behind to beat ADO Den Haag 3-1 in the Philips Stadion on Sunday evening. Tomáa Necid gave the visitors the lead but Bruma and Malen scored a goal either side of the break while substitute Cody Gakpo added a third at the death to secure all three points.

1-1 at half-time

Head coach Mark van Bommel made one change, with Hirving Lozano replacing the injured Gaston Pereiro. PSV had the first chance of the game in the very first minute. Denzel Dumfries played a square ball to Donyell Malen but, one-on-one with Robert Zwinkels, the striker drove his shot straight into the ADO keeper, under the watchful eye of Netherland coach Ronald Koeman. The PSV forwards provided pace and movement up front but lacked accuracy in the final pass.

Mark van Bommel’s team had some half chances, but Malen headed a Sadilek cross over the bar and Zwinkels pushed Lozano’s effort away for a corner. The deadlock was broken on 34 minutes but it was Tomáa Necid who gave the visitors the lead with a powerful first-time strike: 0-1. PSV were again made to chase the game.

Malen had a chance to put his team back on level terms but lacked cutting edge. Armindo Bruma came to the rescue in the 44th minute. The Portuguese winger moved away from his marker and slotted home, with his shot taking a slight deflection off Danny Bakker: 1-1.

Malen put PSV ahead and Gakpo added a third goal

PSV were hit by more injury when Hirving Lozano sustained an injury fine minutes into the second half. The Mexican was carried off the pitch and Cody Gakpo came off the bench to replace him. PSV took the lead in the 52nd minute. Michal Sadílek delivered a fine cross from the left and Malen pulled the trigger: 2-1.

PSV continued to dominate the game and went in search of a third goal. Nick Viergever tried his luck with a backheel effort while Bruma just could not connect with an inviting cross. Dumfries had the ball in the back of the net after 67 minutes but had his goal disallowed as Gakpo was in an offside position. Dumfries fired into the side netting from close range.

Malen came close to taking a two-goal advantage but hit the bar after his shot had taken a deflection off Zwinkels. The best chance fell to Dumfries who had a free header but only rattled the bar.

Gakpo scored a bizarre goal in the second minute of added time. Robert Zwinkels denied Malen but pushed the ball to Gakpo who somehow found the back of the net: 3-1. PSV will entertain FK Haugesund in the Philips Stadion on Thursday evening before they return to Eredivisie action next Sunday when they travel to Almelo to face Heracles (Source: PSV.nl).
