John (59) and his buddy Hans make a lap of honour at Willem II

John, a passionate Willem II supporter, has only 2% of his vision left due to advanced glaucoma (an eye disease). Thanks to the ‘Willem II Maatjes’ project, he no longer has to miss any matches. His buddy, volunteer Hans, accompanies him to the stadium, where John can still enjoy the match through a special blind supporters' section.

"Volunteers are paired with people with disabilities, ensuring that they have a lot of fun together."
Erik Schouten, player of Willem II

During the home match against FC Twente, the buddies are honored. At halftime, John, Hans, and the other buddies take a lap of honour around the field to loud applause from the crowd. For John and Hans, it was an unforgettable moment and a confirmation of the power of this special initiative: football is experienced together.

Willem II Maatjes

Willem II Maatjes, launched by Willem II Betrokken in 2022-2023, pairs volunteers with supporters who need assistance attending home matches. Through careful matching, even fans who would otherwise be unable to attend independently can experience the match at the Koning Willem II Stadium.
