With sadness, the Eredivisie has learned of the passing of Jan Keizer. The former top referee has passed away at the age of 84.
Jan Keizer, a proud native of Volendam, enjoyed a distinguished career as a referee in professional football. Starting in 1966, he officiated both national and international matches, including Euro 1984, the 1984 Summer Olympics, and the 1986 World Cup. His final official whistle was blown during the 1987/88 Eredivisie play-offs in a match between FC Twente and FC Groningen.
Known for his distinctive style, Keizer was one of the most colourful referees in the history of Dutch professional football. In 2001, FIFA honoured him with the Referees’ Special Award in recognition of his exceptional career and dedication to refereeing. In his later years, Keizer battled Alzheimer’s disease and spent his time in a care home.
Last year, during the Christmas season, the Eredivisie, in collaboration with FC Volendam and VriendenLoterij, paid tribute to Keizer in a heartwarming video celebrating his legacy. Sadly, on Monday, FC Volendam announced that Jan Keizer had passed away at the age of 84.
The Eredivisie extends its heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, and loved ones during this difficult time.
