sc Heerenveen have shown mixed form this season, but at the Abe Lenstra Stadion they look like a different team. Their strong home record has kept them firmly in the race for the European play-offs. On Sunday, they host N.E.C. – a direct rival in the tightly packed Eredivisie mid-table.
Last Saturday, things looked shaky early on against Almere City FC, when the visitors took a quick lead. But Heerenveen recovered quickly and secured their eighth home win of the season, with Jacob Trenskow playing a key role. It was also the first time since 22 September 2024 that Heerenveen won an Eredivisie match after trailing – back then, it was a 2-1 win over FC Groningen.
That result reflects a clear trend this season: sc Heerenveen are extremely hard to beat at home. They’ve lost just once in their own stadium in the league (0-2 vs Ajax in January), giving them a loss percentage of just 6.7%. Only three times in club history has that figure been lower. That record puts sc Heerenveen in strong company. Only four teams have picked up more points at home this season, and their total of 30 from 15 home games is equal to Feyenoord’s. Head coach Robin Veldman has also continued the trend: he won both of his first two home matches in charge and can become only the second coach to win his first three Eredivisie home games for Heerenveen — the last was Foppe de Haan in 2015.

One of the standouts in this strong home run is Jacob Trenskow. The Danish forward made his first start since January against Almere City and immediately made an impact. He now has five goals and two assists in 674 home minutes this season — a direct contribution every 97 minutes. Away from home, those numbers drop to one goal and one assist in 747 minutes: a contribution every 374 minutes. Simply put, Trenskow comes alive in Heerenveen.

HEERENVEEN, 17-08-2024 – Jacob Trenskow celebrates his goal against FC Utrecht.
Home ground, real advantage?
On Sunday, sc Heerenveen get another chance to reward the home fans in a match that could prove vital in the play-off race. With the Abe Lenstra Stadion behind them, the numbers on their side, and Trenskow in form, the ingredients are there. But N.E.C., unbeaten in Heerenveen for years, won't make it easy. And with Alireza Jahanbakhsh facing his former club, there’s no shortage of motivation on either side.📺 Watch live via your local broadcaster!
