Feyenoord dented AZ Alkmaar's UEFA Champions League qualification hopes with a 2-1 win in the Eredivisie on Sunday (11th March).
Feyenoord went into their Eredivisie clash with AZ Alkmaar just a few places below them in the table, but a huge 14 points adrift. The visitors needed a win to stay on the heels of Champions League chasing, second placed Ajax, who thrashed Heerenveen 4-1 earlier in the day.
They got off to the perfect start in the 33rd minute, when midfielder Jean-Paul Boetius intercepted a pass in the final third before scoring from the edge of the penalty area to make it 1-0.
Feyenoord would double their advantage midway through the second half courtesy of this strike from Nicolai Jorgensen. The Danish striker calmly converted a Steven Berghuis through ball after a clever dummy helped to split the AZ defence. 2-0.
AZ didn't quite go out with a whimper. Teun Koopmeiners' ball into the box was woefully defended. Wout Weghorst was on hand to steer home an injury time consolation.
Feyenoord are fifth in the league table, AZ remain third.
