The Eredivisie Awards 2023/24 were presented this evening during a festive show at DeFabrique in Utrecht. Luuk de Jong (PSV) and Tessa Wullaert (Fortuna Sittard) were crowned the best players, while Johan Bakayoko (PSV) and Lily Yohannes (Ajax) received the awards for best talents. Edwin van der Sar was honoured with an Eredivisie Oeuvre Award. The Eredivisie Awards were broadcast live on ESPN.
Luuk de Jong and Tessa Wullaert big winners at the Eredivisie Awards
Luuk de Jong was voted Eredivisie Player of the Year by the eighteen team captains (via the players’ union VVCS). He received the award from his brother and biggest fan, Siem de Jong. The PSV captain featured in all 34 matches last season, scoring 29 goals and providing 15 assists. No player in the past fourteen seasons has been directly involved in as many goals (44). Additionally, De Jong demonstrated his versatility as a striker, with 10 goals scored with his right foot, 9 with his left, and 10 headers. Thanks in part to De Jong's scoring prowess, PSV were crowned champions of the Netherlands for the 25th time.
Earlier in the evening, Luuk de Jong had already received the Willy van der Kuijlen Trophy. At 33 years of age, he became the oldest top scorer ever in the Eredivisie, achieving this feat for the second time in his career (2018/’19). Alongside De Jong, Vangelis Pavlidis (formerly of AZ) also received the trophy, having made history by scoring in every Eredivisie match during the first ten rounds.
Tessa Wullaert (Fortuna Sittard) also won two awards: Player of the Year and top scorer of the Azerion Women’s Eredivisie, with 26 goals. Wullaert has since transferred to a foreign club, Internazionale. The award for best player was presented by Jean-Marie Pfaff, a 64-time Belgian international, who also inspired the name of her dog, Jean-Marie Waff.
Johan Bakayoko and Lily Yohannes crowned as best talents
21-year-old Johan Bakayoko (PSV) and 17-year-old Lily Yohannes (Ajax) were chosen by the coaches and national head coach (via Coaches Betaald Voetbal) as Johan Cruyff Talent of the Year. Bakayoko received his award from his friend and teammate Isaac Babadi. Although Yohannes was unable to attend, she had already received her award from Cruyff Foundation ambassador Frank Rijkaard.
Bakayoko has been given the opportunity by the Cruyff Foundation and the VriendenLoterij to establish his own Cruyff Court at a location of his choice. Lily Yohannes will also have this opportunity provided by the Cruyff Foundation.
Bakayoko had a strong season with PSV, scoring 12 goals and providing 9 assists in 33 Eredivisie matches. He was named Johan Cruyff Talent of the Month three times (in October, November, and April).
At just 17 years old, Lily Yohannes has already become a regular in Ajax's first team. In her debut season, she played 31 official matches, scoring five goals and providing eight assists, making her the team's most involved playmaker.
Oeuvre Award for Edwin van der Sar
The Eredivisie Oeuvre Award, a tribute to individuals who have made significant contributions to Dutch football, was presented to Edwin van der Sar. The former goalkeeper received the award on behalf of his agent and good friend, Rob Jansen. Van der Sar was surprised during the broadcast by heartfelt messages from former colleagues and teammates, including Alex Ferguson, Gary Neville, Rio Ferdinand, Ruud van Nistelrooy, and Erik ten Hag.
Feyenoord forward Igor Paixão was honoured with the Goal of the Year award. His goal against FC Utrecht on 31st March 2024 was voted by football fans as the most beautiful goal of the season.
Lastly, the 'Voetbal Geeft' Award was presented to the three clubs with the most innovative and impactful community projects. Excelsior Rotterdam won the top prize with their Voetbal Extra initiative, receiving €50,000 from the VriendenLoterij.
