Ajax need Tadic and VAR to secure 1-0 win over VVV-Venlo

Ajax beat VVV Venlo 1-0 in the Dutch Eredivisie thanks to a VAR penalty scored by Dusan Tadic on Saturday (18th August).

Erik Ten Hag's team were looking for their first victory of the season after drawing against Heracles in the Dutch Eredivisie opener. Ajax came close to open the score in the 30th minute but VVV Venlo goalkeeper Lars Unnerstall  cleared away Noussair Mazraoui's shot in the near post.

The host team saw how referee disallowed Martin Samuelsen's goal in the 39th minute when the 21 year-old midfielder grabbed defender Nicolas Tagliafico to score free of mark. The first half ended goalless.

After the interval, Ajax pushed to break the deadlock with Hakim Ziyech and Mazraoui coming close, but in both occasions they faced an inspired Unnerstall, who saved both chances.

Ajax took the lead from the penalty spot after the referee gifted them with penalty in the 85th minute. The referee needed VAR to see how VVV Venlo defender Roel Janssen fouled Klaas-Jan Huntelaar in the area.

Former Southampton Dusan Tadic scored in the 88th minute to give Ajax the lead. VVV Venlo had the last chance of the match but substitute Jonathan Opoku missed the opportunity for the final 1-0.

Ajax won their first Eredivisie match of the season and have four points after two matches, while VVV Venlo have three points.
