Klaas-Jan Huntelaar scored twice as Ajax comfortably beat Groningen 3-0 to remain second in the Eredivisie on Saturday (15th September).
Ajax appeared to take the lead inside ten minutes from Nicolas Tagliafico, but it was ruled eventually out by VAR. The goal their pressure deserved came seven minutes later, when Tagliafico was fouled by Deyovaisio Zeefuik.
The Referee decided it warranted a penalty and Klaas-Jan Huntelaar stepped up to score a history making goal. Goal number 250 in Huntelaar's league career, and his 127th in the Eredivisie to take him level with the Dutch and Ajax legend Marco van Basten.
Japan's Ritsu Doan came closest for Groningen and Frenkie de Jong tested the Groningen goalkeeper Sergio Padt in a first half where Ajax dominated with 72 percent of possession.
The second half started the same way as the first with Ajax on the attack and in the 66th minute Ajax went 2-0 up thanks to another goal from Huntelaar, who positioned himself well for his second of the match and sixth of the Eredivisie season.
Ten minutes later the game was put beyond doubt after a skillful cross from Hakim Ziyech found Dusan Tadic who made it 3-0 to Ajax.
A very comfortable victory for the home side, who never looked in trouble during their 30th home win in their last 35 games at the Johan Cruijff Arena. But the problems continue for Groningen who have now lost four of their last five games.
Ajax second in league, unbeaten this season. Groningen 16th with just three points from four games.
